National Surface Current Mapping Plan

The current version (v1.0), published 4 September 2009, of the National Surface Current Mapping Plan is available here in Hi-Res(pdf, 15mb) and Lo-Res(pdf, 2.8mb).

There are dozens of institutions that own and operate HF radars within the US.  As those institutions move, add or remove radars, we will attempt to provide updated maps on this IOOS website. In particular, we note that removal of all the Texas radars has been underway recently (Sep 2009) and more accurate maps of that region will need to be created when the final disposition of those radars is known.

The maps accessible on this website will be the most up-to-date maps of existing and proposed HF radar sites available. Both of the map files below can be opened at the same time in Google Earth.

Maps in Google Earth form of the existing HF radar sites and their nominal spatial coverages. Download the Google Earth file here (kmz, 764kb Updated 6-23-2010).

Maps in Google Earth form of the proposed HF radar sites. Download the Google Earth file here (kml, 110kb).

The gap analyses documents from the Regional Coastal Ocean Observing Systems (RCOOSes) that provided input to the proposed HF radar site distribution are available here.

For more capabilities in viewing the near-real-time data maps, please visit either of the IOOS HF radar websites:
